What Does Heartburn Feel Like After Meals Most people suffer from heartburn from time to time. Some who suffer more than twice a week have chronic heartburn. Some who suffer occasionally can take antacid tablets to relieve pain and discomfort. Most heartburn resulting out of gastrointestinal problems are related to intake of food. Knowing what does heartburn feel like after meals may help in the avoidance of foods that cause discomfort. What Does Heartburn Feel Like? What does heartburn feel like is a common question people ask. Common symptoms are: Food rushing back to the mouth Burning feeling in the chest and pressure or pain behind the breastbone that may happen after eating a hot spicy meal and this discomfort lasting up to two hours sometime Bitter taste in the mouth with frequent bursts of salty tasting saliva called water brash, accompanied with severe pain in the chest Chest pain when bending or lying down which soon after eating Not everyone suffers from the same symptoms and these symptoms may not necessarily mean heartburn. To those who suffer frequent heartburns, it may be helpful to keep a track under what circumstances they experience heartburn. So, what does heartburn feel like? Heartburn is a pain which starts behind the breast bone and reaches the mouth. The pain sometimes is so severe that it may seem like a heart attack. What does heartburn feel like can also be a minor chest pain due to bending down position or immediately lying down after eating a heavy meal. Heartburn usually occurs in the evening after a hot spicy meal, or a meal that is eaten too close to bed time, or a meal that is rushed through. Avoid rich and spicy foods. Heartburn could be brought about by chocolate and creamy desserts. Foods full of acid like tomatoes or oranges can lead to heartburn. What does heartburn feel like has already been answered in the above paragraph. Minimizing foods which contain acid may help, and knowing and avoiding food items which cause heartburn may eliminate heartburn altogether. Taking a short walk or sitting upright for a while after a meal allows the food to digest and allows the acids to escape after an overfull stomach. Finally, heartburn is a condition where there is considerable discomfort and pain in the chest when the digestive system does not close so well or relaxes after heavy meal, allowing the stomach acids to rise to the throat and the person has no idea what does heartburn feel like and may at times think that it is a heart attack.

Heartburn and Allergies To Food It is almost certain that if you visit a doctor and complain of heartburn, you will be told to lay off caffeine, alcohol, fatty foods, smoking, etc. But what the doctor may not know is that it could be the kind of bread you eat every morning, or the glass of milk you drink before bedtime that is responsible for your digestive trouble. Many of us have heartburn and allergies to food or food intolerances, and are not award of it. Food Allergies Certain foods and beverages, chocolates, peppermint, fried or fatty foods, coffee, garlic, onions, alcoholic drinks are known to increase acid content in the stomach. Acidic foods like citrus and tomato products increase acid content in the stomach. Carbonated beverages bloat the stomach and put pressure on the intestines which forces the acid content in the stomach to rise, causing discomfort and pain in the chest. Heartburn and allergies to food may also be responsible for some causes of gastroesophageal reflux disease in adults and children. Heartburn and allergies to food due to indigestion is simply the result of not eating the right kind of food. Some people are sensitive to digestive factors other than acid which cause heartburn and allergies to certain kinds of food. Besides ulcers or certain diseases, indigestion in many people is a result of eating too much, eating too quickly, eating high-fat foods or eating too much during stressful situations, or allergies to certain foods. This results in abnormal contraction of the stomach muscles, leading to delays in stomach emptying which increases acidic content in the stomach. The big problem here is to determine allergies to different kinds of food. Heartburn and allergies to certain food may take hours or days after eating a food to which you are allergic or intolerant to. Heartburn and allergies to food like wheat and dairy may take some time to establish as the reason for being sick most of the time. One way to figure out allergies to food is through a blood test. Results may not be 100%, but it is a good way to start finding out what causes heartburn and allergies to food. Chances are that you may come clean. So, the only sure, tried and tested method is an “elimination diet”. Heartburn and allergies to food may not be the real problem, but it is worth ruling out any possibilities before getting into lifetime expensive prescription drugs.

The Basics of GERD
<p>GERD occurs when the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/glossaryl/g/LES.htm">lower esophageal sphincter</a> (LES) does not close properly and stomach contents reflux back up into the esophagus.</p> <p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/cs/heartburn101/a/hrtbrn_symptoms.htm">Heartburn</a> and acid regurgitation are the main <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/gerdacidrefluxdisease/qt/gerd_symptoms.htm">symptoms of GERD</a>, though some people with GERD don't experience any heartburn episodes. This is why it's important to know all the possible symptoms of GERD.</p> <p>While the majority of doctors will prescribe a trial of acid-suppressive therapy, and make a diagnosis based on the patient's response to this, there are <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/diagnosingheartburn/qt/diagnostictests.htm">tests to diagnose GERD</a> a doctor may want to have performed.</p> <p>Treatment for GERD will usually start with certain <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/goodfoodsbadfoods/tp/8-Ways-to-Prevent-Heartburn.htm">lifestyle modifications</a> and <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/goodfoodsbadfoods/qt/mealplanningtip.htm">dietary changes</a>. If you continue to have symptoms after these modifications, your physician will discuss with you the use of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/antacid1/a/needantacid.htm">antacids</a>, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/medsremedies/a/h2blockers.htm">H2 blockers</a>, and <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/medsremedies/a/protonpumpPPIs.htm">Proton Pump Inhibitors</a> (PPIs). If your physician and you decide a surgical option is needed, the most common surgical treatment for GERD is the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/medicalprocedures/a/fundoplication.htm">fundoplications surgery</a>. Another procedure sometimes used in the treatment of GERD is the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/medicalprocedures/a/radiofrequency.htm">radiofrequency treatment</a>.</p> <p>When were you diagnosed with GERD? Please take a moment to answer in the poll below. Hiatal Hernia Basics
<p>A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach pushes through an opening in the diaphragm, and up into the chest. This opening is called a esophageal hiatus or diaphragmatic hiatus.</p> <p><!---rss---> Approximately 50 percent of hiatal hernia patients don't experience any symptoms. For the other 50 percent of patients, the these <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/hiatalhern2/qt/herniasymptoms.htm" target="_blank">hiatal hernia symptoms</a> may occur. There are a number of contributing factors that can cause hiatal hernias. While some patients with a hernia hernia may also have GERD, GERD doesn't cause a hiatal hernia.</p> <p>Various tests can be used to diagnose a hiatal hernia, though the tests most often used are the <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/diagnosingheartburn/a/bariumxray.htm" target="_blank">barium x-ray</a> and the <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/diagnosingheartburn/a/upperendoscopy.htm" target="_blank">upper endoscopy</a>. After the presence of a hernia is diagnosed, the treatment will vary by patient. As mentioned above, approximately 50% of patients with a hiatal hernia won't experience any symptoms, and may not require any special treatment. For those who do experience symptoms, which are usually heartburn related, they can discuss with their doctor the <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/goodfoodsbadfoods/tp/8-Ways-to-Prevent-Heartburn.htm" target="_blank">lifestyle modifications</a>, the <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/goodfoodsbadfoods/qt/mealplanningtip.htm" target="_blank">dietary changes</a>, and any medications (such as <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/antacid1/a/needantacid.htm" target="_blank">antacids</a>, <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/medsremedies/a/h2blockers.htm" target="_blank">H2 blockers</a>, or <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/medsremedies/a/protonpumpPPIs.htm" target="_blank">proton pump inhibitors</a>) that may be needed.</p> <p>In some cases, such as when complications occur with a <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/hiatalhern2/a/paraesophhernia.htm" target="_blank">paraesophageal hiatal hernia</a>, surgery may be needed. This type of surgery is commonly done as a laparoscopic procedure.</p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2012/01/23/hiatal-hernia-basics.htm">Hiatal Hernia Basics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/">About.com Heartburn / GERD</a> on Monday, January 23rd, 2012 at 19:10:14.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2012/01/23/hiatal-hernia-basics.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2012/01/23/hiatal-hernia-basics.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2012/01/23/hiatal-hernia-basics.htm&#038;zItl=Hiatal Hernia Basics">Email this</a></p>
Peptic Ulcer Basics
<p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/cs/articles/a/Peptic_Ulcers.htm">Peptic ulcers</a> can cause a variety of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/pepticulcers/qt/ulcersymptoms.htm">symptoms</a>, and these vary from patient to patient. Some patients with ulcers have minimal, unusual, or even no symptoms at all. Others may have every symptom. This is why it is very important to consult your doctor if you have any concerns.</p> <p><!--rss--></p> <p>It is important to understand the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/cs/articles/a/Ulcer_Causes.htm">causes of peptic ulcers</a>. In the past, it was believed stress and diet caused peptic ulcers. Later, researchers stated stomach acids (hydrochloric acid and pepsin) contributed to the majority of ulcer formation. Today, however, research shows that most ulcers develop as a result of infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (<a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/cs/ulcers/a/hpylori_ulcers.htm">H. pylori</a>).</p> <p>Since most peptic ulcers are caused by <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/cs/ulcers/a/hpylori_ulcers.htm">H. pylori</a>, your doctor will most likely confirm the presence of this bacteria before doing other diagnostic tests. Diagnostic tests tests for peptic ulcers can also include doing an <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/diagnosingheartburn/a/upperendoscopy.htm">upper endoscopy</a> or <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/diagnosingheartburn/a/bariumxray.htm">barium x-rays</a>.</p> <p>If testing shows peptic ulcers are caused by an H. pylori, and standard treatment in these cases is a combination of drugs, including antibiotics and a <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/medsremedies/a/protonpumpPPIs.htm">proton pump inhibitor</a>. If NSAIDS are the cause of your ulcer, you should stop taking these remedies. During the healing process for an NSAID-induced ulcer, your doctor may recommend the use of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/antacid1/a/needantacid.htm">antacids</a> to neutralize the acid, and <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/medsremedies/a/h2blockers.htm">H2-blockers</a> or <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/medsremedies/a/protonpumpPPIs.htm">proton pump inhibitors</a> to reduce stomach acid production. Your doctor may also recommend lifestyle modifications, such as <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/pepticulcers/a/ulcer_diet.htm">dietary changes</a>, for your treatment.</p> <p>Many people think ulcers are an "adult disease." However, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/pepticulcers/a/child_ulcers.htm">childhood peptic ulcers</a> can and do develop. Children develop both <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/glossaryd/g/DuodenalUlcer.htm">duodenal</a> and <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/glossarys/g/stomachulcer.htm">stomach</a> (gastric) ulcers, though gastric ulcers are more common in children. The ulcer's location will determine the treatment.</p> <p>Share your experience: If you have a peptic ulcer, <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/u/ua/pepticulcers/What-Symptoms-Led-To-Your-Peptic-Ulcer-Diagnosis.htm" target="_blank">what symptoms led to your peptic ulcer diagnosis</a>?</p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2012/01/23/peptic-ulcer-basics.htm">Peptic Ulcer Basics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/">About.com Heartburn / GERD</a> on Monday, January 23rd, 2012 at 09:00:43.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2012/01/23/peptic-ulcer-basics.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2012/01/23/peptic-ulcer-basics.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2012/01/23/peptic-ulcer-basics.htm&#038;zItl=Peptic Ulcer Basics">Email this</a></p>

Connection Between Rising Obesity and 50% Increase in Acid Reflux Sufferers
<p>A new study is showing evidence that as obesity increases around the world, the number of people suffering from acid reflux is also increasing.</p> <p>Dr. Eivind Ness-Jensen, from the HUNT Research Center's Department of Public Health and General Practice at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Levanger, is leading a group of researchers who are finding that the prevalence of acid reflux (<a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/gerdacidrefluxdisease/a/knowaboutgerd.htm" target="_blank">gastroesphageal reflux disease</a>, or GERD) has increased by nearly 50% in the past 10 years. The research is showing that the increasing number of people who are obese is the "main attributable factor," Ness-Jensen said.</p> <p>"It's purely mechanical in one way. Added weight increases the pressure between the stomach and esophagus," forcing stomach acid back up, Ness-Jensen said. "There's an increasing weight in the population. That's probably the most important factor."</p> <p>More on the <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/whatcausesheartburn/f/overweightcauseheartburn.htm" target="_blank">connection between obesity and acid reflux</a>.</p> <p>Significant points brought out in the research, which was data collected on nearly 30,000 participants from 1995 to 2009, included:</p> <ul> <li>GERD symptoms are associated with <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/cs/articles/a/esophaguscancer.htm" target="_blank">adenocarcinoma (cancer) of the lower esophagus</a>, and this cancer is increasing.</li> <li>Both men and women of all ages experienced an increase in GERD symptoms</li> <li>The most severe symptoms were mostly among middle-aged people</li> <li>Those least likely to have GERD were women under 40, but women were more likely to develop the condition as they aged</li> <li>Severe symptoms were seen mostly in those aged 60 to 69</li> </ul> <p>You can read an <a href="http://gut.bmj.com/content/early/2011/12/15/gutjnl-2011-300715.abstract?sid=0cfd7405-e391-45b2-81a4-dac9f1e51f14" target="_blank">abstract of this study</a> in the online journal GUT</p> <p><strong>Related Resources:</strong></p> <ul> <li><a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/whatcausesheartburn/f/overweightcauseheartburn.htm" target="_blank">Overweight and the Risk of Acid Reflux</a></li> <li><a href="http://heartburn.about.com/cs/articles/a/esophaguscancer.htm" target="_blank">Esophageal Cancer</a></li> <li><a href="http://heartburn.about.com/cs/longtimesufferer/a/a051103.htm" target="_blank">Barrett's Esophagus</a></li> <li><a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/gerdacidrefluxdisease/a/knowaboutgerd.htm" target="_blank">What You Need to Know About Gastroesphageal Reflux Disease</a></li> </ul><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2011/12/22/connection-between-rising-obesity-and-50-increase-in-acid-reflux-sufferers.htm">Connection Between Rising Obesity and 50% Increase in Acid Reflux Sufferers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/">About.com Heartburn / GERD</a> on Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 at 14:00:50.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2011/12/22/connection-between-rising-obesity-and-50-increase-in-acid-reflux-sufferers.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2011/12/22/connection-between-rising-obesity-and-50-increase-in-acid-reflux-sufferers.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2011/12/22/connection-between-rising-obesity-and-50-increase-in-acid-reflux-sufferers.htm&#038;zItl=Connection Between Rising Obesity and 50% Increase in Acid Reflux Sufferers">Email this</a></p>

Preventing Heartburn at Holiday Parties
<p>The holidays are filled with feasts and festivities -- and sometimes heartburn, too. <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/preventingheartburn/a/hrtbrn_parties.htm">Here's how to avoid holiday heartburn</a>.</p> <p>During the holidays, and anytime during the year, it's important to <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/goodfoodsbadfoods/a/foodscausereflx.htm" target="_blank">avoid the foods that can cause heartburn</a>, learn how to <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/preventingheartburn/bb/nightheartburn.htm" target="_blank">prevent nighttime heartburn</a>, and follow other <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/goodfoodsbadfoods/tp/8-Ways-to-Prevent-Heartburn.htm" target="_blank">methods of preventing heartburn</a> each day. Creating Your Acid Reflux Diet
<p>There is a significant amount of debate going on between researchers and other professionals as to whether certain foods can cause heartburn. Granted, if you don't have an underlining condition that leaves you open to chronic heartburn, what you eat may not be a big deal. But if you are like me, there are certain foods that will trigger heartburn.</p> <p>Over the last couple of decades I've learned what my food triggers are, and what foods are safe for me to eat. If you are still struggling with the whole food / heartburn link, or if you want to know how you can help your friend or loved one suffering from chronic heartburn, you can use this <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/goodfoodsbadfoods/tp/Acid-Reflux-Diet.htm" target="_blank">acid reflux diet guide</a> to help you get started with creating your heartburn free diet.</p> <p><strong>Related Resources:</strong></p> <ul> <li><a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/goodfoodsbadfoods/l/bl_hrtbrnrecord.htm" target="_blank">Heartburn Diary</a></li> <li><a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/goodfoodsbadfoods/a/foodscausereflx.htm" target="_blank">Why Some Foods Cause Heartburn</a></li> <li><a href="http://heartburn.about.com/cs/dietfood/a/heartburnfoods1.htm" target="_blank">Foods Least Likely to Cause Heartburn</a></li> <li><a href="http://heartburn.about.com/od/heartburnfreerecipes/tp/Acid-Reflux-Recipes.htm" target="_blank">Acid Reflux Recipes</a></li> </ul><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2011/12/21/creating-your-acid-reflux-diet.htm">Creating Your Acid Reflux Diet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/">About.com Heartburn / GERD</a> on Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 at 12:10:11.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2011/12/21/creating-your-acid-reflux-diet.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2011/12/21/creating-your-acid-reflux-diet.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://heartburn.about.com/b/2011/12/21/creating-your-acid-reflux-diet.htm&#038;zItl=Creating Your Acid Reflux Diet">Email this</a></p>
